The Danube Delta is the second largest delta in Europe, after the Volga Delta, and the best preserved on the continent.

The delta was created over the past 5,000 years—through much of recorded history. Before that, the delta was a gulf of the Black Sea. The deposition of million tons of alluvia links the three branches of the Danube: Chilia, Sulina and Sfantu Gheorghe (Saint George) with a fascinating net of channels, brooks and ponds.

The biggest pike ever captured weighed 18 kg and was over 1 meter long; the largest catfish weigh nearly 400 kg! The Danube Delta has a human population of around 15,000, living in 25 villages. The lartest town is Sulina, situated at the very eastern point of Romania, with around 5,000 inhabitats.

Over 300 species of birds, and the 1150 species of plants cover a big variety, begining with the lianas from oak forests and ending with water lillis.
